2007 | 08 Season Playbill

me me me …
MAINSTAGE | Oct. 1-12, 2007 | Recommended for Grades 2-7
Written by Lise Vaillancourt
Produced by DynamO Théâtre

Teachers, parents, and children alike will delight in the adventures of Mathilde, an enthusiastic student who's prone to yelling "me, me, me" as she fervently raises her hand in class. Mathilde's eagerness is eventually greeted with mockery from her schoolmates and she no longer feels at home in the classroom that has always been a place of excitement and success for her. Audiences will be captivated by DynamO Théâtre’s imaginative storytelling through acrobatic movement.

Raven Stole the Sun
STUDIO | Oct. 9-21, 2007 | Recommended for Grades SK-4
Play by Drew Hayden Taylor
Based on a traditional story of the Tlingit nation as recounted by Sháa Tláa Maria Williams
Produced by Red Sky Performance

Raven Stole the Sun is a delightful tale about how the sun, moon, and stars came to hold their positions in the sky. It is an authentic and thoroughly engaging introduction to an Aboriginal view of the earth, our home. At once accomplished and unpretentious, Raven Stole the Sun beautifully blends dance, music, and humour to tell its whimsical story.

The Wizard of Oz
MAINSTAGE | Nov. 2-Dec. 30, 2007 | Recommended for Grades SK-6

A fresh take on the classic story, The Wizard of Oz offers an inspiring view of the central character, Dorothy – a feisty heroine who travels a long way to find where her home truly is. Inspired by the original movie musical, this production uses contemporary dance and music, blending an exciting mix of pop culture and nostalgia to create old-fashioned theatre magic. The timeless Arlen/Harburg score includes such cherished favourites as Over the Rainbow, If I Only Had a Brain and We’re Off to See the Wizard.

Touch the Sky

Granted freedom by her father, Belle's emancipation is challenged when her father presents her to a black freeman he has chosen for her to marry. Already in love with one of her father's slaves, Belle seeks the powers of a conjure woman to find a way to be true to her love. What follows is a high-stakes battle of wills over the definition of freedom and the power of faith.

Love You Forever… and More Munsch

Rough House
MAINSTAGE | Apr. 8-20, 2008 | Recommended for Grades SK-5
Created and performed by Andy Massingham
Produced by Nightswimming

A dynamic combination of hilarious slapstick, clever dance and delightful shadow play, Rough House exemplifies physical theatre at its very best. In this Dora Award-winning performance, Andy Massingham takes the audience into a world of discovery as one man explores his environment, and then attempts to control and master it, often resulting in uproarious consequences. Rough House is a one-of-a-kind theatrical experience. There is only one character, one act, and the story is told entirely through superlative movement and lighting technique.

Cranked
MAINSTAGE | Apr. 23-May 3 | Recommended for Grades 7-12
By Michael P Northey
Music/Beats by Kyprios & Stylust
Produced by Green Thumb Theatre

Stan, a.k.a. “definition”, is a rising freestyle MC who loses it all because of his meth habit. He confronts his demons as he preps for an upcoming competition without the ‘fix’ that has dominated his life. Using spoken word and hip hop, Cranked examines the rising epidemic of crystal meth use by teens in an uncompromising way. Freestyle hip hop by Vancouver-based musicians Kyprios & Stylust, punctuate this hard-hitting, contemporary account.

Warning: Strong language and mature situations.

Dead Ahead
STUDIO | May 5-20 | Recommended for Grades 8-12
By Ed Roy
Produced by Topological Theatre in partnership with LKTYP

Cory, Andrew and Tiga are all avid players of the violent video game Dead Ahead. The goal of the game is “Gangland Supremacy in Mega City” where society’s rules, mores, and morality have little currency. Using the game format as a framing device, this teen thriller examines group dynamics, societal responsibility, and ultimately – teen homicide. As the drama unfolds, the play’s characters are thrust into a moral dilemma when one of them commits murder. Is the murder justified? Is murder ever justified? Should they cover up the crime, or should they call the police? In a striking conclusion, the play becomes interactive – and the audience must decide how the ending will be played out.

Ice Fest

icefest.jpg The Bloor Yorkville Area has their annual IceFest happening on Feb 23-25.

On Friday, the 23rd is the Kick Off event with a Winter Wonderland from 35k lbs of ice carved by artists. Ice Carving Competition on the 24th with a People's Choice Sculpture at 5:15p in the Village of Yorkville park. You can even join the contest by clicking here for details. If you happen to be in the area next week, come out of the cold and check out the IceFest.

One comment we have with this event? Requires you to get the entry form at the desk with no other location (like online for example?). We wonder why this is the case apart from ensuring there are bodies at the event. Wouldn't you want to get information on other people who may be interested in coming to the event or the location maybe - not necessarily this time but at all other times? Isn't this the perfect marketing opportunity to get further information about the tourists visiting the area? Why be specifically Ontario residents only? Are we afraid of having to pay for an extra tax just to have a better program? Hmmm... I wonder.
